Running a property business is not easy and since the big crash in 2008 not only in the UK but all over the world, some have lost their properties, others have had to resell them at a fraction of the cost and many decided to never go back to this business again.
So why is it that some of them in 2017 have made it a successful business? and vouch that this is the future? We have decided to meet Gee who is one of the brains and hands behind MCA Properties to give us the tips and confidence that properties will prosper.
Anyone looking at Gee would be impressed with his 6ft3 height and strong build and loud personality, but he actually always have a joke or funny story to make you laugh. He comes towards me stating ‘Hello Emilie! You alright?!’ With my frail build and armed with confidence I replied ‘Yes I am good!’ Here I meet with him on the first property he and Ingrid have refurbished, a property close to his heart he told me. Sitting on an 8 seater red and black sofa, I started by asking my first question. Gee, in his trousers and one of the polo shirts he loves, comes with his American accent, all smiley.
Let’s start, shall we…
First of all, can you introduce yourself?
My name is Gee, G double ee but some people like to write it with the letter G. I was born in Blackpool, England but by the age of 2, my parents moved us to the USA as my dad decided to take on a hotel business and my mum was shipping English antiques. After many years living in USA, they decided 15 years ago to move back to England as the health system was better. Thus, about 7 years ago I moved back to England as I wanted to be close to them, mind you my dad is going to hit 93 years old this year!
So does that make you more English or American?
I consider myself more American than English, to tell you the truth you will still find me moaning about the weather (since I came all the way from Florida) but sooner than later I hope to move back to a warm country. I studied everything that relates to building and construction to the English language when I decided to re-shape my career. Hence why you will find me working within MCA Languages or MCA Properties.
For what reason did you decide to launch MCA Properties?
MCA Properties is not my idea, this is Ingrid’s idea but she likes to give me credit for it. I believe Ingrid has found out my ability and skills within the building business and decided to use my skills fully. One afternoon after viewing a property within the Greater Manchester in order to place students, our disappointments led us to launch our properties to the standard we would agree on living in. Because let’s face it, there are a lot of rubbish accommodations in Manchester and those which offer a decent price are often extortionate. So Ingrid being Ingrid decided after the feedback of parents and students and our own experience, to launch MCA Properties which would cater for professionals and interns.
What are the characteristics of your offer?
At the beginning, we thought that MCA Properties would be good for students and we decided to put MCA Languages students within the properties. We soon realised that mixing students and professionals did not work, we had small complaints that students were hanging around the living room together being loud or coming back late after wild parties. So we decided to go totally the other way by having only professionals and interns. We decided that if people work hard, then they deserve to go back to their house which they could call home. With that in mind we decided to have our rooms luxurious with bills included. Thus we offer cutlery, bedding sheets, dishwasher tablets, paper towels, TP and more. Does this make it like a hotel concept? Some will say yes it is just like a hotel without the restaurant part but I prefer to say it is just like home where everything you need is right there.
What do you like most and what is the hardest part about your job?
The part I like the most about working for MCA Properties is interacting with people from diverse backgrounds. I have learned about countries as far as South Ossetia, I like meeting people coming from beautiful islands such as yours, the Reunion Island or even the Fijis. The hardest part of my job is when something goes wrong at 2 or 3am, this happens at least twice a year and this is where I get a little bit stressed! The last incident was when the pub next door had a leak from their bathroom and it was leaking onto our premises. After looking into it for weeks, going back and forth to the basement and the neighbour’s premises, we had to call the water company which was responsible for one of their chambers being blocked. This was really difficult. Then I also dislike when some of the tenants are not mature and don’t clean up after themselves or are dirty. We have a very strict selection but as you probably know, some people will tell you one thing and act another. Last but not least, I found myself taking calls at 11pm from tenants letting me know the kettle was not working.
As a majority of your tenants are from all over the world, what would you like to say to those in favour of closing the UK borders?
This Emilie is a really good question. Look, without going into politics, I would say that a lot of people have made their lives within the UK and have contributed way more to this country than me who was born English but only came back years ago, and so if you look at it why should I be treated better than my colleagues? Ingrid was born in France but lived all her life in the UK and she has employed a lot of English people (and pays her taxes in the UK), why should she be treated differently? And I think this is what we should look at, I think immigration is a more complex topic that some would want to believe. It goes beyond colours, country and passport. Unfortunately the mass who believe in the Media and do not do their own research or have not met a variety of people like I did will always be narrow minded and hence why Brexit… which is sad in my opinion.
Have you got any projects on the way?
Yes I want to move back to France and I am working with Ingrid to implement MCA Languages and MCA Properties in France! I want to build a massive school there where people can come and camp in the American ranch!
Well that sounds lovely, will you give me a discount?
Emilie, for you I will give you a 3-day pass for free! As long as you do not wake me up at night because you have a problem with your kettle!
