One thing I truly enjoy at #MCA Languages, is to meet students from all over the world but more than that is to hear their stories and to give them the #confidence to strive no matter what the challenges may be. Back in August 2016, I had the chance to teach a wonderful student, her name was Elodie and she had everything going on for her; she was young, beautiful and ready to get her dream job ‘Stewardess’ no matter what it took.
One of her difficulties was to learn English. Acquiring a language is not easy especially when you are all ‘grown up’, adults tends to develop a key towards problem solving, which leads them to look at a language from a completely different standpoint from a child. Adults spend a lot of time trying to figure out why, which makes it hard to understand the basic point the language had made. But more than that, adults don’t absorb information or make the connections as easily as a child. So all the above makes it difficult for an adult student to learn.
Elodie contacted me recently for a reference, but rather than me explaining what she said, she has agreed to share her struggles and success that made her who she is.
My name is Elodie, I am French (by nationality) but I consider myself Portuguese; prior to integrating #MCA Languages, I was working in the Beauty Industry as a beautician. For many years my dream job was always to become a ‘Stewardess’ but like many of the jobs today, companies will ask whether you speak English and if you don’t then that’s a big red flag for them.
So I had no choice but look for a school to learn English and one where I had to immerse myself fully. After browsing the internet for a very long time to find what I thought would be the ‘perfect school’ I stumble upon MCA Languages school. I looked at the reviews, read the comments, went on their facebook pages and website and the more I was researching the more I was intrigued by their method called ‘#Coaching and #Mentoring’ their method adapt student’s learning needs to their objectives. So there I was, contacting them and before you knew it I was flying to Manchester UK.
When I first arrived, it was not as easy as I thought. The groups were relatively small about 3-7 students per class but one thing that was difficult was the coaching method. We had everything from presentations to group work to book analysing. They even paired strong students with the ‘weaker’ one in order to give them some challenges. Something new for which I have never encountered before.
I knew that my level of English was not as high as other students and for some reasons I got shy. I then talk to my Teacher/Coach who decided to create a programme just for my needs.
From there, I learned how to let go about the negativity and only focus on the positive. I learned to become more confident and to never give up.
Today, 2 years later, I am here to testify that it works, confidence is a thing. After many years of hard work I finally achieve my biggest challenge: ‘becoming a stewardess’
I just want to say to anybody out there who think they can’t dream big, well you can! I want to tell you to always believe in yourself and don’t let anybody destroy your confidence.
Today as I celebrate the big news with my love ones, I finally overcome all these emotions ready to step in my new job. I just want to finish by saying ‘always persevere because one day or another just like me your dream will come true’
