Travelling in 2017 may look very easy: you can go on the internet to buy your plane/bus/train ticket in a few seconds and a few hours are enough to get to the other end of the globe. However, today many issues can come in the way of such a project: terrorist groups leading dreadful attacks, borders being closed, human rights being disrespected… You can even fear a plane crash or worse, it can disappear from the surface of the earth!
But are these reasons good enough to stop traveling and to stay home?
Let’s start with the easiest one: planes do crash sometimes, but how many take off and land safely every day in every airport? You don’t hear about them, because there is nothing to say, everything went fine. So let’s not start with thinking you will die before arriving!
More seriously, such horrible things as a terrorist attack can clearly undermine your will to go. Especially the last couple of years have been very difficult and the world has suffered from fanatics who defend extremist ideologies and kill in the name of their God. The only way to prove them wrong… is to keep living. They must be shown that an outdated, strict and unfair society cannot be implemented. Religion should be a matter of love, peace and above all, a private matter. From the moment when innocent human lives are threatened, they must be shown that they cannot and will never be right, and to do so, they must see that their actions only strengthen the society model they are trying to destroy. See how people in Paris kept going for their café en terrasseright after the Bataclan attack, in a sign of resistance and a symbol of this precise uncensored way of life.
Religious or political extremists also aim at a polished society where all the individuals would be from the same origins and background. What they tend to forget is that the entire world was built thanks to encounters and sharing. It has been quickly understood that economical trading could only work with social and cultural exchange. Of course, a country’s borders must be protected and controlled, but closing them, building a wall or refusing to lend a hand to people in need does not reflect what a society should be. Actually, acting that way causes a waste of talent which are rejected and from which the society won’t be able to benefit. On the contrary, diversity is what makes people grow up, open their mind and what allows the society to move forward and to thrive, for it will be richer, stronger, more generous and harmonious.
Try to separate two people from two different worlds and they will only fight harder as one and only person.
So let’s not be afraid, live in fear of something happening and realise its too late that life has gone by. Instead, let’s keep living and building a world where sharing, helping each other and discovering new cultures still makes sense. Let’s keep travelling and meeting new people, sharing wonderful moments, learning about a city’s history, culture and people. Let’s keep bringing diversity to an unwavering level and showing that this is the path for a better world.
